Cambridge-George S. Smith, 85, of Cambridge, passed away Thursday night, March 16, 2017 at The Cambridge.

George was born February 26, 1932 in Cambridge the son of the late Roy and Ida (White) Smith.  He was educated in Cambridge and had served his country during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army.

George worked for the Cambridge Lumber Co. for 20 years and he then worked for Washington County in Maintenance.  George last worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Cambridge as a mail carrier and also inside the facility for 15 years until he retired.

George trained harness horses and was a member of the NYS Trotting Association.  He also enjoyed hunting and fixing things that needed repair.  George was a member of the Captain Maxson Post 634 American Legion in Cambridge and the Sprague Springs Camp.

In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his sisters, Frances Guber and Shirley Smith.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Linendoll Smith, whom he married May 2, 1959; his children, Christopher (Donna) Smith of Eagle Bridge, Donald Smith of Charleston, SC, Mary Jane (Joseph) Young of Cambridge, George P. (Sheila) Smith of Savannah, GA and Kathleen (Robert Endee) Smith of Cambridge. 

Additional survivors include a brother, Charles “Snuffy” (Sheila) Smith of Greenwich and a sister, Alice Gaal of Cambridge; 7 grandchildren, Scott Smith, Shawn Smith, Rebecca Young, Ethan Young, Patrick Smith, Kristen Smith, Tyler Endee; 3 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 1-3 pm at the Ackley, Ross & Gariepy Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.

Funeral services will be at a later date at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
